As a leader in forensic engineering, armed with expertise gained through nine decades in the field, we are pleased to share our knowledge with colleagues throughout the industry. Haag’s line of seminars includes almost all roofing types, foundations, siding, framing, electrical issues, lightning damage, fire origin and cause, earthquake damage, and many more.  Our engineers present courses which are open to the public at various tradeshows annually.  We also keep abreast of the constant changes in continuing education requirements.  Haag maintains providership licenses with all states that require continuing education for insurance adjusters, enabling us to provide our students CE credit for all our courses.

Lightning Damage to Electrical Equipment presents the origins and characteristics of lightning and the ways it can affect electrical equipment typically found in the home or office. We discuss basic methods of protecting electrical equipment from lightning damage. The effects of lightning are demonstrated through the display and discussion of various examples of lightning-damaged electrical equipment. We also discuss evaluating claims of damage caused by lightning.

Crane Safety for Supervisors

Haag’s Crane Safety for Supervisors gives attendees thorough understanding of crane safety issues. This course will give students the confidence to properly identify lifts, accurately calculate loads, and develop a critical lift plan. We instruct on generating critical lift diagram, and then identifying high risk issues and ways to minimize those risks. In addition, students will learn how to:

Commercial Roofs Damage Assessment provides students with a comprehensive look at the most common types of commercial roofing materials. We take a detailed look at weathering, specifically hail and wind, as applied to commercial roofs. We examine manufacturing, installation, and natural weathering for the primary commercial roofing types: Built-up, Modified bitumen, EPDM, and Other major flat roof systems. Learn how to differentiate between aging and hail, wind, or mechanical damage. Color photos depict the various types of commercial roofing systems and common damage/problems.

Composition Roof Evaluation for Underwriters

Composition Roof Evaluation for Underwriters is designed to assist the underwriter in an office to evaluate composition roofs based on photos. The class examines the characteristics of hail that contribute to damage and reviews hail impact testing that is commonly conducted on roofing products. The course makes heavy use of PowerPoint slides to illustrate issues with composition shingles that are related to manufacturing, installation, weathering and various types of damage, including wind and hail damage.  The class also covers similar issues with modified bitumen and roll roofing products.

"Unsealed" Asphalt Shingles

Unsealed Asphalt Shingles focuses on the design and function of sealant strips on composition shingles. Students will learn the installation and sealing process, as well as how proper installation can help a roof resist weathering forces. We will identify three reasons why shingles do not seal and/or become un-bonded, the areas of a roof that are prone to wind damage, and the identifying characteristics of wind-damaged shingles. We will differentiate the effects of wind from other issues caused by manufacturing, installation, or weathering.

California Earthquake Adjuster Accreditation

California Earthquake Adjuster Accreditation provides instruction on earthquake characteristics, engineering principles, damage evaluation, and then apply those principles to several detailed case studies (Northridge 1994). It discusses the three California Earthquake Authority policies, techniques for scoping earthquake loss, deductibles, fair claims settlement laws, earthquake mediation, and disaster relief assistance. This course meets statute requirements for adjuster accreditation for California Earthquake Authority earthquake claim work.

Fire Cause and Origin Inspection

This course focuses on procedures and techniques for identifying the origin of a fire at a residential or commercial property. We will discuss methods for determining the cause of a fire, the basic components of sustained combustion, propagation beyond the point of origin, and examples in the form of case studies. Current procedural guidelines for conducting a fire investigation, as outlined by NFPA 921, are presented in this course.

Foundation Types, Distresses and Repairs

This course will give students the fundamental concepts of soil behavior and an overview of structural parameters necessary to understand the response of pier and beam, concrete slab, and basement foundations. Sudden Damage Vs. Maintenance Issues

Sudden Damage vs. Maintenance Issues helps students distinguish between distress caused by “sudden” movements of a structure (settlement, strong wind, earthquakes, etc.) vs. normal material deterioration or shrinkage. This course specifically discusses hurricane/tornado damage, and contrasts it with normal settlement or weathering damage found in a building. Case studies illustrate field inspections and ultimate classification of distress. This course addresses residential and light commercial structures.
